Wests Tigers have dropped Mahe Fonua to the reserves after he turned up to training nearly an hour late.

The 25-year-old overslept on Sunday and turned up to training close to an hour late, according to reports in Australia.

Wests’ coaching staff have discussed the suitable punishment and they have all agreed that Fonua will be dropped for Thursday’s clash with Penrith Panthers.

The Tonga star will instead play for Western Suburbs Magpies this weekend, Wests’ reserve grade side in the Intrust Super Premiership.

The punishment comes as a blow to Fonua and the Tigers, with the outside-back having established himself as a first team regular in recent weeks.

He has made three appearances since joining Wests from Hull FC in the off-season, scoring one try as well as coming up with an assist. He has also bust 12 tackles and made two clean breaks.
