Sean Long and Danny McGuire will link up at half-back while Leon Pryce – who played at stand-off for St Helens – will have to reprise his role out on the wing.

Stuart Fielden returns from suspension in the front row, along with Adrian Morely as the other prop and Terry Newton at hooker.

Jamie Peacock will captain the side from the second row along with Gareth Ellis, while Sean O’Loughlin will start at loose-forward.

Martin Gleeson and Keith Senior will pair up in the centres, with vice-captain Brian Carney recovering from a potential knee injury to start as winger, and Paul Wellens was the automatic choice to play at full-back.

Garreth Carvell, James Roby and Gareth Hock – all uncapped – will take up places on the bench, with Jon Wilkin a fourth possible debutant after he was bracketed with Lee Gilmour as seventeenth man.

The Lions have been training at Manly Sea Eagles’ Brookvale Oval and are set to fly over to Christchurch on Thursday to complete their preparations.

Great Britain will know that if they beat the Kiwis they will have one foot in the final after their hosts lost the opening two games of the tournament to Australia.
