NRL move confirmed for English rising star Lewis Murphy

Super League club Wakefield have confirmed that hot prospect Lewis Murphy will leave the club at the end of the season to take up an opportunity in the NRL.

The 21-year-old will link up with Sydney Roosters in the NRL ahead of the 2024 campaign.

A statement from Wakefield read: “Lewis will leave the club with our very best wishes and we thank him for his service to Wakefield Trinity.

“Go and smash it, Murph.”

The speedster has scored 19 tries in 24 appearances for Wakefield since bursting on to the scene in 2022.

Murphy was called up to the England Knights squad last year for their test matches against Scotland and France B but didn’t play due to injury.

Lewis Murphy recovering from ACL injury

Unfortunately, the Englishman hasn’t played since March due to suffering a season-ending ACL injury against Huddersfield in round three.

Speaking back in March, Wakefield coach Mark Applegarth said Trinity would support Murphy throughout his recovery.

He said: “We are just supporting him now, getting him recovered as quick as we can so he can continue his playing career.

“We’re just really disappointed for him personally. We know how much he was looking forward to backing up that season he had last year.

“We’ll be there to support him every step of the way and make sure he doesn’t feel isolated or lonely. We’ll keep him around the lads and focus on him getting fit and ready for next year.

“I’m just gutted for him. He’s such a nice, humble kid who just wants to work hard and get better. He lives and breathes it.

“It’s a cruel blow, but that’s sport unfortunately. I know he is a strong character with a good support network around him. I’ve got no doubts he will be back bigger and better next year.”
