Leigh fight off Fax to sign Smith

Leigh have signed former Super League back-rower Paul Smith, after he left his player-coach role at Swinton.

Smith has previously played for Huddersfield, Halifax and Rochdale, before moving to Swinton for the current campaign, but he stepped down last week following a disappointing run of results.

He said: “I’ve been at Swinton as player-coach but am now looking to come and play for the rest of the season. Once I knew Leigh were interested with Ian Millward as coach, fantastic facilities and seeing their results so far, I wanted to join the team.”

“I just want to concentrate on playing now. I’ve got experience and played in the Grand Final for Halifax last year, I think I’ll also add enthusiasm.”

Leigh Coach Ian Millward said: “At this point we’ve had a successful season, although we’ve started to pick up some injuries. In anticipation of the rest of what we hope will turn out to be a long season, we thought Paul’s availability was a good option for us.”

“He was about to sign with Halifax, and we are glad that we were able to bring him over to Leigh. He will add a lot of experience to our team.”
