Leigh coach John Duffy says they are “definitely interested” in signing England star George Williams.

On Tuesday, Canberra Raiders announced they had granted Williams an immediate release from his contract, with the 26-year-old effectively becoming a free agent.

Wigan are the frontrunners to sign Williams, whilst Warrington have also been linked with the highly-rated playmaker. Leeds, Wakefield, Newcastle Thunder are also keen on securing the services of Williams, with Leigh the latest club to register their interest.

“Of course we are,” Duffy said when asked if they were interested in signing Williams. “If we can get someone like that on board it would be fantastic.

‘I’m sure George has got some top, top clubs from everywhere after him as well but yeah, we’re definitely interested.

“If he was to come to Leigh it would be fantastic but the big, big clubs will be all over George at the minute with the way he’s playing so we’ll just have to see what happens.”

Next up for Leigh is a trip to Hull KR on Sunday afternoon as they search for their first win since their return to Super League.
