Leigh debut for local lad

Leigh are set to hand a debut to local youngster Anthony Nicholson in Sunday’s Northern Rail Cup quarter-final against Hunslet.

Hooker Nicholson, who was signed from amateur side Leigh Miners Rangers earlier this year, has been drafted in after Ian Millward’s side was hit by a number of injuries.

Millward said: “Ricky Bibey and Matty Blythe are definitely out, and a number of other players have picked up a few bumps and bruises.

“It’ll be a proud day for Anthony as he’s a local guy, and has come through the ranks at Leigh Miners.”

Nicholson toured Australia with the Great Britain Community Lions Under-18 squad in 2009 and scored six tries in 12 appearances for the Miners first team before catching the eye of the Centurions coaching staff.
