Legend Schofield set for Barrow job

Great Britain legend Garry Schofield is set to be unveiled as the new coach of Championship club Barrow.

The Raiders, bankrolled by the ambitious Des Johnston, have been interviewing candidates for several weeks following the departure of Steve McCormack towards the end of the season.

Former Blackpool coach Martin Crompton and Jon Sharp, most recently at Crusaders, had been favourites for the job, but it seems that the ex-Leeds and Hull stand-off has got the nod.

Barrow won the Championship Grand Final in 2009, in their first season after promotion, and are one of three clubs likely to submit an application for Super League in 2012.

Schofield, Great Britain’s most capped player of all time along with Mick Sullivan, is a regular columnist for Rugby League World magazine, and has recently been working on rugby league in South Africa.
