Leeds Rhinos man played through pain in Wakefield win with horrific injury as season over

Leeds Rhinos winger Alfie Edgell’s season is over: after it emerged he played for over half an hour with a torn quadricep in the victory over Wakefield Trinity.

Edgell suffered the serious injury in an attempt to score a try in the early stages of the second half at the DIY Kitchens Stadium last weekend. However, he played on through the pain barrier to remarkable effect, helping the Rhinos close out a crucial comeback win against third-placed Wakefield.

However, it has come at a cost, with Edgell now set to miss the rest of 2026 – but there is a boost elsewhere with Ryan Hall’s return confirmed for this Thursday’s clash against Leigh Leopards.

Edgell to miss rest of season

Leeds coach Brad Arthur confirmed the news in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday morning – and insisted the winger will now have a lengthy recovery period again as he suffered another serious injury.

He said: “Poor Alfie, his bad luck has struck again. In his effort to try and score that try he tore his quad. Bravely he played on for us and although he couldn’t stride out, he knew he needed to stay out there for us. He could play that remaining 30 of the second half but his season is done unfortunately. He’s a tough kid, he’s been there before and we’ll go there again.

“You can’t sugar coat it. It is what it is. Every time he’s got his opportunity he’s made the most of it and his luck will change at some stage. He’s got plenty of time, his club has invested plenty of time in him and he’s not playing for a contract so he can be patient and rehab it, and do the right things and get another chance next year.”

Arthur also confirmed Hall’s return for Thursday, saying: “It’s good for Hally. He’s been keen to get back out there. It’ll be a good lift to have another senior player out there. I’m happy for Hally. He’s happy to get back and you’ll never be 100 per cent fit at this stage, but he’s worked so hard that he’s close enough.”

Maika Sivo and Keenan Palasia updates

Meanwhile, Arthur confirmed that the plan remains for Keenan Palasia and Maika Sivo to return from their respective injury lay-offs for the final round of the season against Hull FC.

“If you asked him, he’d play tomorrow,” Arthur said of Palasia.

“He’s doing everything he can but we’ve got a plan in place to make sure these guys stay on the field. He’s looking at Round 27 as is Maika and we’ll stick to that.”

Arthur also said that hooker Danny Levi still needs one last check-up before he can be cleared to feature after the horrific incident which saw him stretchered off against Castleford Tigers last month.

He said: “Danny is really keen to get out there to play. It could only be a couple of weeks.. he’s got a check-up next week, his strength has come back and he’s upbeat. He’s right there and he wants to be playing but it’s making sure we get the all-clear on the next scan as he won’t need a heap of contact work. He’s really close.”
