League One Player Spotlight – Matty Wilkinson

Following our recent coverage of League One and Championship games, we have picked out a player that has caught the eye.

There was one man that particularly excelled on the new fast track that Oldham will use in 2018.

That player is former Salford youngster Matty Wilkinson. After also representing Halifax last term, Wilkinson joined Oldham in mid season and did enough to earn a permanent deal.

The sprightly hooker looks set for a big future and earned special praise for his performance against Keighley Cougars at the weekend.

“This kind of surface, that kind of game, that sort of speed with some good people in front of him, is what Matty is all about.” Naylor said.

“The intelligence he has at picking a ball up in space and running when you get near somebody’s line; the ability to pass and find the right play, it’s always been Matty’s strength. I think we forget how young he is. He’s relatively a baby really for a hooker.

“It’s only onwards and upwards for someone like Matty with the abilities he already has and his attitude towards training and towards the club and everything else. It’s absolutely outstanding.

“It’s a good thing that he plays for us and long may it continue. Going forward, he’s only going to get better and he’s going to be an absolute top quality player.”
