League 1 round-up: Forster inspires Whitehaven, Cockayne bags hat-trick, Keighley on top form

There were a couple of vital results in round 25 of League 1.

Bradford Bulls picked up another two points and kept pressure on league leaders York City Knights with a hard-fought 24-16 win over Oldham at the Vestacare Stadium. Matt Storton, Jy Hitchcox, George Flanagan and Ross Peltier all scored for the Bulls.

Workington Town ran-out comfortable 38-6 winners against London Skolars at Derwent Park on Sunday. Tyllar Mellor, who is on loan from Huddersfield Giants, got two tries for Workington, while fellow Giant Tyler Dickinson also got on the scoresheet for Town. Scott Rooke also scored twice for the Cumbrian outfit.

Carl Forster marked his final game as player-coach of Whitehaven with a hat-trick to help his side beat Coventry Bears 24-20 at the Recreation Ground on Sunday. Marc Shackley scored Haven’s other try, while Forster won it for the hosts three minutes from time.

York City Knights are just one win away from winning the League 1 title following a convincing 56-6 thrashing of Hemel Stags at Pennine Way. Ben Cockayne bagged a hat-trick for the Knights, while Matty Marsh got two.

Keighley Cougars ran in 20 tries to thrash West Wales Raiders 112-6 at Stebonheath Park. Andy Gabriel, Cameron Leeming, Ritchie Hawkyard and Alfie Seeley all bagged hat-tricks for the Cougars. West Wales only started the match with 12 players available and had Dalton Desmond-Walker sin-binned for fighting in the second half and Craig Lewis was sent off for dissent.

France international put in yet another classy display to guide Newcastle Thunder to a 46-10 victory against Hunslet at the South Leeds Stadium. Marginet scored two tries and kicked seven goals, while Theerapol Ritson also bagged a brace. Josh Tonks and Conor Fitzsimmons were both sin-binned for fighting in the second half.

Doncaster kept their play-off hopes alive with a fine 36-12 win over North Wales Crusaders at Queensway Stadium, with Jason Tali scoring twice for the Dons. Jack Houghton was sin-binned for Crusaders late on.
