League 1 round-up: Doncaster perform comeback, expansionists battle it out, Workington snatch win

Doncaster came up with the performance of the opening League 1 weekend.

Doncaster came through 22-4 behind at half-time to win 32-26 against Newcastle Thunder at Kingston Park on Saturday.

Connor Bower, Jordie Hedges, Jason Tali, Matty Chrimes, Jordan Howden and Kyle Kesik scored Doncaster’s tries.

Whitehaven beat Keighley Cougars 28-16 in the opening round of the League 1 season at the Recreation Ground on Sunday.

Jake Moore and Andrew Bulman bagged braces for Haven, while Chris Taylor also scored. Whitehaven’s Kris Coward and Keighley’s James Feather were sin-binned late on for fighting.

Coventry Bears ran-out 28-4 winners against West Wales Raiders in the battle of the expansionists at the Butts Park Arena.

Hayden Freeman, Elliott Hall, Jacob Jones and Dante Morley-Samuels all crossed Coventry’s tries.

Workington Town scored two tries in the last eight minutes to clinch a pulsating 32-28 victory over Oldham at the Vestacare Stadium.

Elliott Miller (2), Tyllar Mellor, Perry Singleton, Gordon Maudling and Sean Penkywicz all crossed for Town.
