League 1 round-up: Coventry pull off shock result, Workington win again, two hat-tricks

Coventry pulled off a stunning victory against Newcastle on the weekend.

Coventry Bears came up with the result of the weekend as they edged past Newcastle Thunder 32-28 at the Butts Park Arena.

Jacob Jones, Elliot Hall (2), Rob Butler, Hayden Freeman and Nick Newman all crossed the whitewash for the Bears. Coventry forward Butler was sin-binned on the hour mark for an illegal tackle.

Hunslet won their first game of the season as they defeated Doncaster 20-18 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Ben Heaton, Gareth Potts and Adam Robinson scored Hunslet’s tries. Hunslet pair Josh Tonks and Danny Nicklas were sin-binned in the second half for fighting and a high tackle.

Sam Grant scored a hat-trick to inspire London Skolars to a 28-18 victory over West Wales Raiders at Stebonheath Park on Saturday.

Omari Caro and Jordan Williams also went over for the Skolars.

Workington Town eased past North Wales Crusaders 48-18 at Derwent Park on Sunday afternoon.

Gordon Maudling, Oliver Wilkes, Perry Singleton, Jamie Doran, Caine Barnes, Sean Penkywicz, Danny Tickle and Tyllar Mellor scored for Town.

Zack McComb bagged a hat-trick to help Oldham thump Whitehaven 36-12 at the Vestacare Stadium.

Ritchie Hawkyard (2) and Dave Hewitt also went over for the Roughyeds.

Workington and Coventry are joint top of the League 1 ladder, having won their first two fixtures.
