Dr Marwan Koukash has taken to Twitter to confirm that he is interested in buying an NRL club.

Rumours down under have linked the Palestinian-born entrepreneur with the Newcastle Knights.

“I would confirm that there has been some contact with an NRL team, but it is very early days. My absolute focus remains on the Red Devils,” he tweeted.

Matthew Johns, a former Newcastle star, stated on his Triple M radio show on Wednesday that Koukash was interested in the Knights.

“Dr Koukash is obviously a big NRL fan and his goal is to own an NRL team,” Johns said.

“He is absolutely desperate to buy the Newcastle Knights and is about to begin the process to be able to take ownership.

“Now the question is, can the people of Newcastle and the NRL trust another billionaire private owner.”

The NRL is currently in charge of the Knights, having taken over the club in June.

The Australian governing body controls 80 per cent of the club under the new model of ownership. The Members Club controls a minority 20 per cent.
