Castleford back-rower Kenny Edwards has hailed his son as his motivation to join the Combined Nations All Stars for this weekend’s test against England.

Ellery Hanley’s All Stars face Shaun Wane’s side this Saturday at the Halliwell Jones Stadium as preparations for this year’s World Cup.

Edwards, 32, has been recalled up to the side having featured in their 26-24 victory last year in Warrington.

The back-rower admitted he had his doubts, explaining that Castleford’s recent victory in Toulouse had left him battered and bruised with the extremely hot conditions.

However, Edwards explained to Love Rugby League that a phone call with his eight-year-old son following the Super League clash re-motivated him to join Hanley’s side.

Kenny Edwards reveals conversation with son about All Stars call-up

“I was informed about a week ago that I was going to be in the side. I was really keen,” Edwards told Love Rugby League.

“Then we (Castleford) went over to play in Toulouse in 34 degrees. It was after that game I was a bit ran down and a bit sore.

“I got on the phone to my son and I said ‘son, do you want dad to stay at home with you this week or do you want dad to go to the All Stars camp?’ and my son couldn’t be more proud of me.

“He said ‘dad, I want you to go to the All Stars camp’ and he said to me that I might not ever get the chance to play for the All Stars again.

“When I heard that, it reinforced to me what it means to be in a side like this. I’m proud that I can be here.

“My son only being eight years old, he’s glowing. He goes to school and tells his mates and he’s proud of it too. That’s the biggest thing for me.

“He’s so proud and he loves his rugby. He lives and breathes rugby.

“His dad is his biggest idol and that’s why I’m here. Him and my daughter, they’re my why and why I’m here. To hear him so glowing and so proud over the phone and telling me to go into the All Stars camp really meant a lot to me.”
