Keighley have announced winger Robert Matamosi has signed a new contract with the club for the 2022 season.

Matamosi joined the club from West Wales ahead of the 2021 season. However, injuries and his duties with the Army as a logistics engineer limited him to just three appearances.

The 23-year-old was spotted by the Raiders playing for the Army. Whilst playing for the Raiders, his 80-metre try against Doncaster alerted the attention of several clubs, with Keighley winning the battle for his signature.

Speaking about his new deal, the Fijian said: “I am very grateful to Rhys and the club for the opportunity and for signing me back to the club for next season.

“I didn’t get to play lots of game last season due to injuries and my work in the armed services but I’m looking forward to getting another crack this year.

“Hopefully I can help the club get that promotion now at the end of the season.”

Keighley favourites for promotion

In the initial announcement of the odds by SkyBet, Keighley were named as 5/2 favourites to make a return to the Championship.

They have been in the third tier since 2015. In 2021, they mounted a good challenge for promotion. The Cougars finished fourth, and were seconds away from reaching the playoff final. But a late Liam Johnson try and Jake Sweeting conversion sent Doncaster through instead.

Rhys Lovegrove has been busy adding to his squad ahead of the new season. Lewis Young has signed from Newcastle, while Chris Cullimore joins from League One rivals Midlands Hurricanes. They have also brought in some youngsters from Super League academies. Myles Tate and Nathan Roebuck have signed from Warrington, while Anesu Mudoti comes in from Hull KR.
