Wigan coach Matt Peet confirms injury blow to Kaide Ellis

Wigan coach Matt Peet has revealed that they will be without prop Kaide Ellis for around a month with a hamstring injury.

The Australian forward didn’t play in Sunday’s 22-6 win over Wakefield, having pulled his hamstring in training earlier in the week.

“Kaide Ellis actually pulled his hamstring in training this week,” Peet said after the game.

“He was set to play but he is probably going to miss a month unfortunately.”

Wigan’s comfortable win over Wakefield saw them go top of the Super League table. The Warriors leapfrogged rivals Warrington due to having a superior points difference.

Peet said: “We’re building. It’s a long season and we are aware there is much rugby to be played.

“So far we’ve had some good days and we’ve also had a few bumps in the road but we’ll just keep working hard.

“The fact the break has come now doesn’t really make a difference, hopefully we’ve got some lads playing for England or if not, it is an opportunity to freshen up and get a bit of work done. We’re happy with what we are building.

“It was a different kind of start and a different challenge. Our start set the tone pretty well. It took Leigh a while to post points last week and credit to Wakefield, they are a team who are far from giving in and they make you work for it, so I thought our start was very professional.”

Matt Peet doesn’t expect any further action on Willie Isa

Wigan forward Willie Isa was sin-binned in the second half for what the referee deemed as a dangerous tackle on Harry Bowes, which saw the Wakefield hooker leave the field for a head injury assessment.

“I think that’s a textbook tackle,” Peet said. “If that’s not allowed, I don’t know what we are supposed to teach players. It was just a good tackle.

“I don’t think the referee was going to make a call until he got a word in his ear. There’s loads of tackles that I agree with where we have to adapt our tackling technique but for me, that was textbook.”

Next up for the Warriors is a trip to Hull FC on Thursday, May 4.
