Jonny Lomax coy on whether he will play at World Cup

Jonny Lomax

St Helens’ Jonny Lomax is in doubt for England’s World Cup campaign later this autumn.

The 32-year-old half-back has been carrying a bicep injury since the club’s Super League win over Salford in April.

If fully fit, Lomax would be expected to pull on the England shirt for the tournament in autumn under boss Shaun Wane.

However, following his side’s record-breaking Grand Final victory, Lomax neither confirmed nor denied his involvement for England’s tournament.

While World Cup squads had to be submitted by September 24, players who featured in the Grand Final have extra manoeuvre to be included in the 24-man squads.

Jonny Lomax to have medical advice ahead of World Cup

“I don’t know decision wise what’s going on or anything like that,” Lomax told Love Rugby League.

“I’ll speak to the medical team here (at St Helens). Everyone will have a review that might be involved in it in the next few days and we’ll go from there.

“For the mean time, that won’t be in my mind. It will be celebrating an incredible achievement that we’ve just had.”

Kristian Woolf’s Tonga duties

Departing St Helens boss Kristian Woolf also had to submit his Tonga squad on the same day of his side’s Grand Final appearance at Old Trafford.

The likes of Jason Taumalolo, Felise Kaufusi and Daniel Tupou are expected to be selected in the squad. Woolf could also pick the likes of Konrad Hurrell, Agnatius Paasi and Will Hopoate from his Saints side.

“It has been a busy week,” Woolf told Love Rugby League.

“I was up at 4:30am the day we had our captain’s run making phone calls to Australia to sort out the Tongan 24.

“Grand Final weeks are busy as it is. Throw in the Morgan Knowles judiciary on top of that, it has been a pretty busy week. But nothing a few beers won’t fix now!”
