Johns thinks Warrington are capable of silverware

Andrew ‘Joey’ Johns is of the belief that Warrington’s squad is capable of challenging for trophies this season.

Johns has been offering his help to Tony Smith’s side during the warm weather training camp in Tenerife as they prepare for their season opener against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley on February 4th.

The ex-State of Origin star has said that despite the high number of new faces that the squad now has, he believes the quality in the side is the best he has ever seen it.

“There are a lot of new faces, I only knew half a dozen of the guys. There’s probably eight or nine players that have come into the squad,” Johns told the Warrington Guardian.

“I’m really impressed. It’s a really good mix with some older players, some younger players and I think it’s probably the best camp I’ve been involved with over here. They’ve really trained well. Fingers crossed they can have a big year this year.”

The 41 year-old has been helping with both the young players as well as some of the older heads such as Kurt Gidley, who he has worked with before at Newcastle. Johns believes the squad Tony Smith has now assembled has a real chance of silverware this time around.

“They’re really trained well. The old experienced guys like Kurt (Gidley) and Chris (Sandow), but also the younger guys. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the young guys this season, the two back rowers in particular, Ben Currie and Jack Hughes,” he said.

“It’s a real big squad. The last couple of years they haven’t had those big bodies. They’re slipped the last couple of years, but there’s been some shrewd buys and I think they’re going to be really strong.”
