John Duffy announces retirement

Leigh half-back John Duffy has retired at the age of 32 after failing to recover from a back injury.

Duffy had hoped to play for Scotland in the forthcoming European Cup, but has been advised by specialists to hang up his boots.

He became Super League‘s youngest ever debutant when he played for Warrington at the age of 16 in 1997, and also played for Widnes, Salford and Whitehaven.

He said: “It’s been an emotional few days. I’m very sad to miss Scotland‘s games as they were going to be my swansong.

“I was so proud every time I joined up with Scotland – Steve (McCormack) and Dave have created a great environment which brought out the best in us. I hope the boys can do it without me!”

Duffy will now take up a coaching role at Leigh.
