Wigan forward John Bateman suffered a broken rib in the early stages of their defeat to St Helens at Magic Weekend but played through the pain.

Warriors coach Matt Peet has revealed that he will be out of action for around a month whilst he recovers from the injury he sustained in their 20-18 defeat to Saints.

Peet said: “John Bateman has broken a rib so he is going to be out for around a month. He did it really early in the game. Credit to him, he played tough and he was in discomfort throughout.

“He had a bit of attention at half-time but it had never entered my mind that he had broken a rib but that’s just John, as we all know he is tough.

“I think for all 34 players at the weekend, the game went up a few levels I thought.”

Matt Peet has “no complaints” with Brad Singleton ban

The Warriors will also be without starting prop Brad Singleton, who has picked up a three-match suspension after being sent off against Saints for a high tackle on Curtis Sironen.

The Ireland international will miss Wigan’s upcoming games against Hull, Leeds and Hull KR. Peet said he had no complaints with Singleton’s three-match ban given to him by the Rugby Football League’s match review panel.

However, Peet confirmed that they will welcome back Australian prop Kaide Ellis for Friday’s home clash against Hull.

Meanwhile, Wigan skipper Tommy Leuluai is facing six to eight weeks in the treatment room.

Peet said: “We are going to err on the side of caution with Tommy due to the time of the year and the timing of his career, we won’t be rushing him back.”
