Joe Mellor wants improvements from Widnes

Widnes co-captain Joe Mellor wants to see improvements from the Vikings when they travel to Wakefield on Saturday.

The Vikings were defeated by Huddersfield Giants at home last weekend but Mellor thinks plenty of improvements can be made from Denis Betts’ outfit on Saturday.

He said: “It wasn’t a great performance, especially in the first half.

“In the back end of that second half, we showed what we can do when we get in the opposition’s half.

“We know what we need to improve on, and it’s pretty simple really, its keeping hold of the ball.

“When we get in good field position, we’re playing and defending well. It’s going to be a big ask this weekend but we’re looking forward to it.”

Widnes have only won two out of their opening six games in Super League this season and even though some of their losses have been close margins, Mellor insists the Vikings need to pick up wins soon.

He added: “I think I’ve started the season well. But then again, I want to win games and that’s what we all want to do.

“We’ve only won two games up to now, and it’s not what we want, so hopefully we can get things back on track this week.”
