Joe Mellor rejoins Widnes

Widnes have resigned Joe Mellor from Wigan on loan.

Mellor had a spell with the Viking during last season’s Championship campaign, and turned out to be a promising young player. He will replace Scott Moore, who parted company with Widnes late last week.

The 21-year old played 14 games and scored seven tries for the Vikings last year. He featured for the Warriors in the Vikings’ first Super League win, a 37-36 win over Wigan.

He will be available for selection ahead of Widnes’ trip to Langtree Park on Friday when they face St Helens.

Denis Betts said: “It’s great to have Joe back on board. He’s a fantastic kid with a brilliant attitude who needs Super League experience, that’s obviously restricted at Wigan at the moment, given the amount of quality players that are currently in front of him.

“We’ve sought but not found a permanent acquisition to offer us cover in the half back positions, so our next best option was to find somebody who would be able to slot into our environment easily and add quality to our first team squad.

“As he proved in his last spell at the Vikings, Joe is a committed player and a good professional who wants to be part of the team. I’m confident he will have a similar impact this time around and make the most of his latest opportunity at the club.”
