Widnes have announced that half-back Joe Lyons has signed a new one year deal with the club.

Lyons, who has been through every stage of the club’s pathway from the Widnes Vikings Development Squad through to the first team squad, has put pen-to-paper on a deal until the end of the 2020 season.

The young half back made his first team debut for the club against Leeds Rhinos in 2018, impressing massively in the Super 8s despite the club’s relegation to the Betfred Championship.

2019 has been a breakthrough year for Lyons, who made 25 appearances for the Vikings as he cemented his place in the first-team.

On the contract extension, Lyons said: “It’s great to have this sorted out and sign a new deal.

“I’m looking forward to getting my head down, being back in with the lads and focusing on having a good year.

“This club is the only place that I’ve wanted to play my rugby, so as soon as the offer was on the table, I wanted to sign.

“I was happy with my year last season, and I put in some good performances, and it was a massive learning curve for me. I played a lot with Danny (Craven) last year and we built up a good relationship, so with him and Jack (Owens) re-signed, that’s a good start for us.

“The fans were great last year. They always got behind me and the boys wherever we played, and kept us going whenever things got hard. I’m looking forward to more of the same from them in 2020.

“It’s like a new start for us and it’s exciting for the players as well as the fans. I just can’t wait to get going again.”
