South Sydney Rabbitohs have appointed Jason Demetriou as Wayne Bennett’s assistant coach for the next three seasons.

Demetriou joins the Rabbitohs from Brisbane Broncos, where he was Bennett’s right-hand man for the previous two years.

The 42-year-old will provide experience to Souths, having been assistant coach at the Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons and North Queensland Cowboys; as well as head coaching roles with Illawarra Cutters, Northern Pride and Keighley Cougars.

On the appointment of Demetriou, Rabbitohs’ general manager of football Shane Richardson said: “Jason is highly regarded as a coach in rugby league circles and comes highly recommended from coaching counterparts as well as many of the players he coached at Brisbane, North Queensland and St George Illawarra.

“He has the runs on the board as both a head coach at the professional and semi-professional levels of the game, as well as being an assistant at the elite levels, both here and in the northern hemisphere.”

Willie Peters has also been promoted to an assistant coaching role with the Rabbitohs, while Jarrod Wade will become the club’s head of performance.
