Former Super League stand-off Jamie Rooney is set to make his debut for Gateshead on Sunday.

Rooney, 34, will face one of his former clubs in the shape of South Wales Scorpions in the Championship One clash.

He last played at Whitehaven before hanging up his boots at the end of last season, having previously played for Featherstone, Castleford, Wakefield, Barrow, Limoux and England during a prolific pointscoring career.

Rooney said: “I’ve been missing the game. Hopefully I can help Gateshead get promotion as well as bringing on the young lads.”

Winless South Wales currently sit bottom of the Championship One table, four points behind Gateshead, who have managed one win from five.
