Inside Castleford Tigers’ strangest night in recent history as fans make Ryan Carr thoughts clear

Wheldon Road has staged many a memorable night in its history, but few have been as strange as this one.

It has been quite the week at Castleford Tigers. They started the week in an all too familiar position of trying to respond from another heavy defeat. They ended it with their head coach nowhere to be seen.

Ryan Carr held his weekly press conference on Tuesday afternoon. A few hours later he’d been informed he was suspended and the players were told soon after that.

Castleford’s silence was deafening for the 24 or so hours it took for them to say anything. It transpires that they waited to break their silence until after a board meeting that occurred on Wednesday.

They said Carr was not in place for personal reasons. With respect, few people bought that, and it only added to an already bizarre situation.

The reaction of the supporters was always going to be fascinating on this night, and in the end it was quite telling.

From the opening minute of the game, songs in support of Ryan Carr rang from the Wheldon Road end. Beyond that, negative chants were aimed at the players. Certain individuals were booed every time they touched the ball. They were told they weren’t fit to wear the shirt. They sang that Ryan Carr was right, followed be a rhyming word about their own abilities. We’ll leave you to figure that one out.

It was brutal on the players, though it should be noted it wasn’t unanimous either. They were applauded off the field by supporters in the main stand.

That said, any thoughts that developments may trigger a response from the players were unfounded. They had a crack in the first half, though they never looked like scoring. The second half was same old, same old. Another collapse. 34 unanswered points. It’s been all too familiar this season.

The situation at Castleford is a perfect storm. Their season is over from an aspirational sense, some players, potentially some of those leaving the club at the end of the year, appear to have taken their foot off the pedal. And then, of course, there is the Carr element of this.

There has been a lot of conjecture and speculation about what has prompted in Carr being stood down. According to sources, Carr got heated with some of his players at half-time of the Warrington defeat, and it did not sit well with the playing group. Sources have alleged that Carr has rubbed up certain players the wrong way and ‘lost’ them, so to speak.

But whatever the situation is, it very clearly needs to be resolved quickly. Fans deserve clarity and the club needs it to allow them to move forward.

It’s hard to see a future in which Carr coaches Castleford again, but irrespective of that, Friday night proved there is a disconnect between the club, its players and at least a section of the fanbase.

That can turn toxic quickly, and take some repairing. Castleford have enough on their plate already.

But this is clearly a matter that needs fixing, and fast.
