St Helens moved three points clear at the top of the engage Super League table with a resounding win over Hull FC at the KC Stadium.

The Airlie Birds’ defeat sees them knocked out of the play-off positions for the first team this year. Paul Wellens provided a superb virtuoso performance, scoring a well-taken hat-trick.

Jonny Lomax‘s 13th-minute effort set the ball rolling for the visitors, before Sean Long – just agreed a deal to join Hull FC next season – sent Wellens over for the first of his three.

Danny Tickle‘s converted try ensured Hull got on the scoreboard, but Wellens eased over for his second with a minute to go before half-time.

Long had a hand in the third Wellens try as well, the talisman showing a good work ethic in controlling the ball and possession, teeing up England‘s first choice full-back to put Saints 18-6 up. That figure was duly increased to 20-6 with Long’s succeeding conversion.

And Saints finished the game in style with two further tries, the first of which came from Lee Gilmour on 66 minutes, before Maurie Fa’asavalu rounded off the Saints romp.
