Huddersfield start with Widnes win

Jermaine McGillvary crossed for two tries as Huddersfield defeated Widnes 28-16 away from home in their first Super League game of 2017.

McGillvary bagged a double in the first half to give the Giants a lead 20-6 buffer at the break.

The Vikings came back into the game but Huddersfield finished them off with tries to Aaron Murphy and Leroy Cudjoe.

Huddersfield Giants head coach Rick Stone told the BBC: “It wasn’t too bad, we controlled the first half well, made a few little errors and Widens came pretty hard in the second half so there’s a little bit to work on.

“But it’s nice to go away and get a win in the first half.

“We had some good intent, played nice and direct and had good intent, some good last tackle options through Danny Brough.

“We came up with some decent plays to score some points and give ourselves a buffer that we needed in the end.”
