Two late tries from Jake Connor and Eorl Crabtree gave Huddersfield a 28-20 victory over Leeds Rhinos to leapfrog the Champions in the Super League table.

With both teams enduring a slow start in the league this season, both wanted to gain an advantage over the other with a win at the John Smith’s stadium.

It was the Giants who started the brighter and they took the lead through Ukuma Ta’ai as he barged over from close range to the left hand side.

The home side then had two tries disallowed by the video referee, which they were made to rue as Jordan Lilley collected a Liam Sutcliffe grubber kick to give the Rhinos the lead for the first time. A Lilley penalty goal made it 8-4 at the break to Leeds.

The second half was entertaining and end to end, with the lead changing hands six times throughout the game.

First it was Gene Ormsby who sneaked in the left hand corner after good hands from those inside him, before Josh Walters barged over at the other end following an outstanding break from Jordan Lilley.

The Giants were not to be behind for long as Jermaine McGillvary cut inside after good hands once more from the home side to put them back in front. The skipper for Leeds, Rob Burrow, sneaked over from close range in his usual fashion to give the Rhinos the lead once again.

However, the Giants were not to be denied in this game as Jake Connor and Eorl Crabtree tries in the last ten minutes of the game swung the game in Huddersfield’s favour to give them a much needed victory.
