Sheffield Eagles have confirmed the permanent signing of versatile half-back Tom Holmes from Featherstone Rovers.

Holmes has been on loan with the Eagles since March, and has so far featured primarily at hooker in the absence of Vila Halafihi.

The 26-year-old has scored two tries and kicked eight goals in nine appearances for Sheffield to date.

This marks the end of a second permanent spell with the Rovers, signing a deal until the end of the season across Yorkshire.

“Tom has been outstanding throughout his loan spell,” said Eagles director of rugby Mark Aston.

“We have jumped at the chance to bring him to Sheffield permanently. Tom’s experience at Super League level has already helped everyone progress and it will continue to push us on to be a better team.”

Castleford born, Holmes first debuted in Super League with the Tigers in 2015. From there, he moved to Featherstone for a first spell before being picked up by top flight club Huddersfield.

After a short loan back at Post Office Road, Holmes re-joined ahead of the 2021 season. He featured in the Million Pound Game against Toulouse last year but struggled for game time this term before being loaned out.

Sheffield are 7th in the Championship table. They have won seven of 13 games to date. Featherstone meanwhile sit top, chasing promotion to Super League.

Revolving Championship Door

Holmes becomes the second player of the week after Cory Aston to move to the Olympic Legacy Park.

Scrum-half Aston, 27, linked up with the Eagles on loan from fellow second tier club Halifax. His deal is initially set to last for three weeks.

Holmes also becomes the second player to move on from Featherstone this week. Brandon Pickersgill yesterday returned to Bradford on a one-match loan deal.

Finding game time at the Rovers hard to come by after the signing of Mark Kheirallah, Pickersgill could feature against Sheffield this weekend for the Bulls.
