St Helens are understood to have agreed a deal for Justin Holbrook to become their new head coach.

Holbrook has previously worked in the NRL with Canterbury, St George and Parramatta before becoming assistant to the former Catalan boss, Trent Robinson, at Sydney Roosters. The 41-year-old also coaches the Australia U20 team.

Saints’ chief executive, Mike Rush, recently travelled to Australia to target potential candidates, with Holbrook quickly short-listed for the role alongside former Wigan and Leeds forward David Furner and ex-Salford coach John Cartwright.

St Helens are currently seventh in the Super League, just two points ahead of Friday’s opponents Warrington.
