Whitehaven have terminated Sam Thompson‘s contract by mutual consent.

Thompson, who only joined Haven in October, admitted using a banned performance enhancing substance to his coach Ged Stokes when he was selected for a random drugs test by the World Anti-Doping Agency at a training session.

Whitehaven director Ralph Calvin, speaking to The Whitehaven News, said: “Whitehaven RLFC have a zero tolerance drugs policy, this is well known to our players and head of performance Gary Hewer and head coach Ged Stokes have made it more than clear to all players that the club do not condone the use of recreational or performance related drugs and will not tolerate behaviour that could bring the club into disrepute.”

The 23-year-old prop forward made five Super League appearances for St Helens in 2008 and has also played for Harlequins, Widnes and Barrow.
