Halifax RLFC has confirmed the signing of former St Helens forward Matthew Haggarty.

The 25-year old who joined the Saints at the beginning of the 2015 season, has also played for a host of Kingstone Press Championship sides such as Dewsbury Rams, Oldham Roughyeds and newly-promoted Rochdale Hornets.

Haggarty spent majority of the 2016 season on-loan at St Helens’ dual registration club the North Wales Crusaders.

The powerful prop-forward made eight appearances for the Wrexham-based outfit and last season also saw him turn out for Super League side Salford Red Devils.

He was part of the squad that dismantled Hunslet Hawks 50-14 in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup game at the South Leeds Stadium.

“I am looking forward to kickstarting his career,” Halifax coach Richard Marshall said.

“He is a big, physical man who did not really get the rub of the green at St Helens.

“However I think that he has gained some valuable experience while he was out on loan with the North Wales Crusaders.

“He is a quality Kingstone Press Championship player and he has shown in recent years, I am glad that we have managed to secure him for next season.”
