Dewsbury fullback Josh Guzdek is planning on making a return for the first home game of the season against Swinton after picking up a knee injury on Boxing Day against Batley.

Guzdek is likely to miss the opening game of the season against Rochdale.

Since his move to the Rams over a year ago, Guzdek explained how fellow teammate Paul Sykes has played a key part in his development.

“Sykesy has been one who has been quite good for me,” he told Love Rugby League.

“It’s good to have him within the team to settle us all down if we get complacent within a game.

“He has given me a few tips here and there on positioning, attack and things like that.”

After spending his first full season in the Championship, Guzdek is a bit more at ease with the style of play.

“Going into this year I’ll know what to expect whereas the year before I was sort of going into the season a bit unknown what the Championship would be like,” he said.

“It might possibly give me a bit more confidence for the games going into them.”

Pre-seasons are known for a being a hard time of the year but this one has been more challenging than usual following the arrival of a new Strength and Conditioning Coach, according to Guzdek.

“This pre-season has been tougher than usual since Adam Mitchell’s arrival,” he said.

“Having somebody who knows what he is doing is a lot more beneficial for the boys getting them ready for the start of the season.”

When asked about head coach Glenn Morrison, Guzdek explained how he is keen on letting players know whether they need to up their game or if they have done a good job.

“He knows how to look after the players and bring me to a side when I’m not performing well enough or when I’m performing well,” he said.

“You get both sides from him so I get to know where I stand.”

In terms of his aspirations for the season ahead, a regular place in the starting 13 is something which Guzdek is focused on the most.

“Just to play consistently again, get a run of games and stay injury free,” he said.

“Hopefully the contract side of things will look after itself once I get that sort of thing right.”
