A new documentary about the Great Britain Lions tour to the southern hemisphere is coming to BBC iPlayer.

The documentary titled Once Were Lions comes to BBC iPlayer on Saturday, November 21. It follows the GB Lions as they toured New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in 2019.

The film looks at the game of rugby league, its heritage and reflects on Great Britain’s performances. The feature-length film explores rugby league’s northern heartlands and looks ahead to the future, with the 2021 World Cup being staged in England.

Dan McGolpin, controller of BBC iPlayer, said: “This gripping documentary film gives iPlayer viewers privileged access to the GB Lions squad on tour together with fascinating insights into rugby league, its roots and its future.

“Whether you are new to the sport or already a fan, it’s an enjoyable and rewarding watch ahead of next year’s World Cup.”
