Grady proud of Scorpions internationals
South Wales Scorpions coach Mike Grady is delighted that six of his club’s players have made it into John Kear’s Wales squad.
Captain Phil Carleton and player-assistant coach Paul Emanuelli are both in line to make their international debuts at the age of 30.
Connor Farrer, 19, and Jordan Sheridan, 20, are two of the club’s youngsters who have graduated to the international ranks, while Kyle Scrivens and Ashley Bateman are also included.
“What a fantastic achievement for these lads to achieve the highest honour possible in the game, to represent your country,” said Grady.
“For some of these lads it’s their first year in the professional game and they have come on massively throughout the season.
“Credit to John Kear for giving the Scorpions lads a call up and the chance to experience the environment.
“John has kept in touch with me and welcomed my thoughts on who I feel could play a part in his squad from the Scorpions, and whether the boys get capped or not it’s a great achievement and one that will stick with them forever.”
Farrer and Grady could also be in line for further glory this season, with both nominated for end of season Championship One awards.
Farrer is nominated in the Young Player of the Year category, while Grady is one of the candidates for Coach of the Year.
“It’s fantastic for the club to have two nominations for these prestigious awards,” Grady added.
“What I can I say about Connor that hasn’t been said already? He gives 100% in every game, has been our top try scorer this season and is a young Welsh star in the making.
“He’s up against some tough competition but I hope he takes the trophy home.
“As for myself, this has been a complete shock. All I can really say is that my fellow coaches have recognised how tough it is to build rugby league in South Wales and I’ve been recognised for that.
“I’m looking forward to attending the awards night and we’ll see what happens.
“Considering the start we had as a club, we have picked up some fine individuals honours along the way and possible one or two more at the Championships Award night.”
