Former Newcastle great Matt Gidley is set to take charge of playing operations at the Knights, after taking up a new role.

Gidley, who made 221 appearances for the Knights between 1996 and 2006, has been appointed as CEO of Football Operations.

Previously he was Business Development Manager at the Knights after returning to the club in January.

The former New South Wales representative and Australia international said he was delighted to be involved with the players.

“I have really enjoyed being a part of the business side of sport and particularly the Knights and I am really looking forward to the challenge in front of me,” he said.

“I am honoured to be CEO of Football Operations for the Knights, it is something that was always in the back of my head but I never dreamed it would actually become a reality.”

He added: “I sincerely thank the Hunter Sports Group for the opportunity and the faith they have put in me.”
