Giants strong finish too much for Wakefield

Michael Lawrence and Graeme Horne each bagged two tries in a fine second half performance for Huddersfield as they saw off Wakefield at the Galpharm stadium.

Luke Robinson opened the scoring for the Giants after eight minutes, with Chris Dean replying for the visitors in a close first half, only a Danny Brough penalty on the half time hooter separating the teams at the break. Former Wakefield star Brough ultimately proved to be the difference between the teams, setting up three tries and kicking five goals.

The Giants moved through the gears after the break, cutting loose with some fine attacking rugby and running in five tries to warm up for next Friday’s top of the table clash with Warrington.

Graeme Horne powered his way over two minutes after the break, but Ben Jeffries responded for Wakefield and the Wildcats were still very much in the game after an hour, however, like last week against Leeds, Wakefield visibly tired and Huddersfield capitalised with 22 points in the last 20 minutes.

Michael Lawrence strolled over first before the try of the day; a superb offload by Faiumu in the middle of the park allowed Grix to break clear and was supported by Brough who found Horne who finished brilliantly in the left corner.

Lawrence showed good strength close to the line to claim his second try moments later, and Sean Lunt capped a fine display as he pushed through the tired Wakefield defence for a typical hookers try with five minutes remaining.

An encouraging crowd of 7267 was on hand to witness another professional Huddersfield display that moves them up to second in the table, and sets up a potentially mouthwatering clash with Warrington in front of the TV cameras next Friday.
