Huddersfield Giants have signed England Academy international Matthew Sarsfield from Wigan Warriors.

The 18-year-old back rower has penned a three-year full-time contract with the Giants after impressing while on trial with the club.

Sarsfield starred for England in the recent series win over Australia and Huddersfield have high hopes for their new recruit.

“It’s a super signing for us and one that shows how highly we are now regarded in the game by top line players,” said managing director Richard Thewlis.

“Young Matthew had a superb international series and has trained with the first grade here since then with a view to staying on when he had other offers on the table to start immediately.”

Leigh-born Sarsfield is expected to make his Giants debut against Batley on Sunday 9th January alongside fellow new faces Joe Wardle, Matthew Dawson and Jon Molloy.

“I could have signed earlier at other clubs but the Giants are where I wanted to be and I am delighted to have got this deal,” he said.

“The step up to full time will be hard but it’s a challenge I am looking forward to and to my debut at Batley at the weekend.

“We have got a lot of younger players all pushing for first team places in these friendly games and all of them look to have the benefit of full time training which makes such a difference.”
