Garry Schofield’s son signs for Dewsbury

The son of former Great Britain captain Garry Schofield, Jonathan, has signed for Championship side Dewsbury.

Schofield, 21, has recently returned from Australia and has experience at this level having previously played for Hunslet and York.

Despite being well equipped in the halves, coach Warren Jowitt says Schofield has pledged to fight for his place.

Jowitt told the club’s official website: “”His agent contacted us and I agreed to have a look at him. He is well aware of the fact we have lots of cover in that area.

“He’s eight weeks behind the rest of the squad in terms of pre-season training and I have told him that he would almost certainly be our fourth or fifth-choice half-back.

“But, and to be fair to him, he has trained with us, he’s impressed and he has told me that he wanted to sign and fight for a place here.

“He’s still only young and I believe he can make it into the side. Everyone has a chance here, he just has to prove himself.

“His presence will put pressure on other players in that area and that can only be a good thing.

“He’s a smart kid and he’s taking to training really well.”
