Gareth Widdop set for Warrington move

Warrington have won the race to sign Gareth Widdop for 2020, according to reports in Australia.

The Daily Telegraph says the England international has agreed to move to Super League and walk away from the final two years of his contract at St George Illawarra Dragons.

Widdop, 29, has won 28 caps for England but has never played professionally on these shores having moved Down Under from his hometown of Halifax at the age of 16.

His deal at St George was worth $1.8m, but he stunned them before Christmas by expressing his wish to return home.

That alerted the top clubs in the UK and it is believed he has fielded offers from multiple clubs in Super League, but the Wolves have come out on top and they now have the prospect of Widdop playing alongside Blake Austin in the halves in 2020.

He made his name at Melbourne Storm, playing 71 times for them before joining the Dragons in 2014.
