Former Crusaders player Gareth Thomas has revealed he is HIV positive.

In a Twitter video on Saturday night, the 45-year-old said he was compelled to make the announcement.

Thomas completed the Ironman triathlon after making the announcement, where he received huge cheers.

He now wants to break the stigma that is attached to the condition. With effective treatment, the HIV virus cannot be passed on.

He said: “I want to share my secret with you. Why? Because it’s mine to tell. Not the evils threatening to tell you before I do.

“Now even though I’ve been forced to tell you this, I choose to fight to educate.”

Thomas earned 100 caps for Wales in rugby union before crossing codes to play rugby league for two seasons with Welsh outfit Crusaders between 2010-11. He played 31 games for Crusaders and earned four caps for Wales.
