Former Super League winger Corey Thompson announces retirement

Former Widnes Vikings winger and current Gold Coast Titans star Corey Thompson has announced his retirement from rugby league, aged 32.

Thompson made 122 appearances in the NRL across three clubs and 58 in Super League with the Vikings.

The winger began his career at Canterbury Bulldogs, making his debut in 2014. He featured across two seasons before making the switch to England with Widnes. In 2017, he scored 27 tries, finishing the season as the second-highest try scorer behind Denny Solomona.

He returned to the NRL with the Wests Tigers ahead of the 2018 season before linking up with the Gold Coast Titans. Thompson had been contracted for the 2023 season but announced his retirement on Friday.

He also represented the Indigenous All Stars in 2021.

Thompson posted on social media: “I’ve decided to retire from professional rugby league. I’ve been lucky enough to call this my job for the past 10 years.

“Thank you to the four clubs I’ve been a part of for allowing me to represent your organisation. I’ve made life long friends along the way that I’m so grateful for.

“Thank you to all the people that supported me along the way and my partner for making this decision easier. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
