Former Salford Red Devils forward Jamie Pye has stepped away from the game at the age of 23.
Pye, who signed for Rochdale Hornets on a two-year deal ahead of the 2026 season, has decided to take time out from the sport, with the club revealing that a change in personal circumstances has resulted in his decision.
Initially coming through the St Helens system, Pye joined Salford in 2024 and made three appearances for the club while also spending time on loan at Barrow Raiders, where he made 15 appearances over two seasons.
His future in the game is now unclear though. Rochdale chairman Andy Mazey provided a comprehensive update on the club’s current squad availability, and within it confirmed Pye’s decision to step away.
The statement read: “Disappointingly, Jamie Pye, who we signed from Salford, was unable to complete the pre-season with us due to a change in his personal circumstances. Jamie has stepped away from the game for the time being, with our support.”
Rochdale are currently without nine first-team players, who all missed their 20-0 defeat to Whitehaven at the weekend.
Jordan Paga (broken leg), Matty Unsowrth (ankle), Jordan Andrade (arm), Max Flanagan (concussion), Dan Nixon (concussion), Ethan Wood (concussion) and Dan Lloyd (unspecified), are all injured, while Paddy Jones retired before the start of the season due to commitments to the fire service. Captain Ross Whitmore represented Scotland in the Las Vegas 9s last week and was also unavailable.
The Hornets host Sheffield Eagles this Sunday before a bye week. They return to action the week after against Midlands Hurricanes.
