Flower sticks with Wigan

Prop Ben Flower has signed a new four-year deal that will see him stay with Wigan until the end of the 2020 season.

Flower signed for Wigan in 2012 from the Crusaders and made his debut against Huddersfield Giants in round one of the 2012 Super League season.

An international prop with Wales, Flower has won three major trophies during his time at Wigan and played a key role in the double-winning team of 2013 when Wigan won both the Challenge Cup and Super League.

The 28-year old has played 90 times for Wigan since 2012.

“Ben Flower’s contract was due to expire at the end of this season and we have been well aware of significant interest from many high-profile clubs, both in Super League and the National Rugby League competitions,” Wigan Warriors Chairman Ian Lenagan said.

“Our Rugby Director Kris Radlinski and I have been in negotiations with Ben’s representatives for some time now and are happy that the conclusion of those negotiations have seen Ben commit his future to the Wigan Club.”

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane said Flower is one of the best props in the competition.

“We believe that Ben is one of the best Front-Row forwards in Super League and an integral part of the team and it’s great that this new deal has been agreed,” he said.

“Ben works hard on and off the field and is always looking to improve. We believe that he has his best years ahead of him and are delighted that those will be here at Wigan.

“Ben can now concentrate on playing to the best of his ability and helping the team achieve what we all want this year which is silverware.”

Flower said he loves playing for Wigan.

“To be able to play in games like the World Club Series against Brisbane on Saturday is an honour and something I don’t take for granted,” he said.

“My family and I are really settled in Wigan, my little boy has grown-up here and we’re expecting another child soon so we’re settled here and that’s important to me.

“I’m really pleased to have signed this new deal and look forward to the years ahead.”
