Fiji side to join NSWRL competition in 2020

The NSWRL has confirmed a Fiji-based team will join the Ron Massey Cup next season as they aim to eventually play in the New South Wales Cup.

The Kaiviti Silktails will join the competition in 2020 as they aim to boost the development of rugby league in Fiji as well as providing an easier route for Fijian players to the NRL.

Former Australia and Fiji international Petero Civoniceva has played a key role in the team’s bid to get into the NSWRL completion.

Civoniceva said: “It’s been about six years in the making but something of this nature was always going to take time.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have a good support network of people behind this push.

“This will be a wonderful pathway to help local talent chase their dream of playing professional rugby league.”
