Featherstone set for ground upgrade

Featherstone Rovers have started plans to upgrade their BigFellas Stadium – by purchasing two stands from the disused McCain stadium.

The former home of Scarborough Football Club and one time home of Scarborough Pirates RLFC is to be demolished as part of the development of a new leisure village for the coastal town.

Scarborough council voted to demolish the stadium, which has been derelict since the football club was wound up in 2007 and Featherstone Rovers have moved quickly to agree to buy two of the stands from the Seamer Road site and carry out demolition as part of the deal. It is thought that the pitch at Post Office Road will now be moved 10 meters away from the residential stree, and extended by 10 meters as well as levelling up the famous slope, before rebuilding the new stands at either end, replacing the old terracing as the ambitious Championship club look to improve before the next round of SuperLeague applications in three years time.

Meanwhile in tonights televised Championship clash on Sky Sports, Rovers’ Ian Hardman (knee) faces a late fitness test before Daryl Powell names his Rovers team, but Michael Haley and Tom Hemingway are both fit and available for selection as Powell looks to claim a fourth win in five Co-operative Championship fixtures this year.
