Fantasy RL: Picking your team – top second rowers

James Gordon

Ahead of the new season, we’ll be looking at options for your Fantasy Rugby League team in all positions in both Super League and the Championship.

A wide running second rower that scores a few tries might just turn out to be the difference in your team this season, so pick carefully.

Wigan captain Sean O’Loughlin is selectable at second-row, and alongside him at £175k is Warrington pair Ben Murdoch-Masila and Ben Currie, who could wind up scoring plenty of tries if things go well. BMM managed 128 points at an average of more than six per game for Salford last season.

Top price in the Championship is Toronto’s Cory Paterson. Another option at £40k is Halifax’s Shane Grady.

You will no doubt be looking at some <£100k options for your second second-rower, and that means Alex Mellor (£50k) or Tom Olbison (£75k) might catch you’re attention – don’t be afraid of splitting your two back-rowers across both positions though. Instead of having one expensive and one cheap option, two options at around £125k may well turn out to be a winning combination longer term.

At the bottom of the Championship, former Super League man Martin Aspinwall could be a bargain pickup at £10k. The Barrow captain is likely to average at least those two points per week.
