Fantasy RL: Picking your team – top hookers

James Gordon

Ahead of the new season, we’ll be looking at options for your Fantasy Rugby League team in all positions in both Super League and the Championship.

Today we look at the options for your number nine shirt.

While perhaps not as prolific as your half-backs or outside backs, there are still points to be scored by your hooker. A Matt Parcell, for instance, scored more than 100 points than Danny Houghton last season (both available priced at £175k).

One of the headline signings of the Championship is available at hooker, in Toronto’s Josh McCrone. A bit of an unknown quantity at this level, McCrone is available at £50k – but remember, all of the Wolfpack’s first 12 games are away from home!

A bargain option might not be best for this position. Choosing an interchange hooker will only earn you a point a week, unless they start chipping in tries, so try and get someone who is going to start every week. That rules out everyone under £100k, but if you’re writing hooker off to create room on the cap in other positions, then Adam O’Brien (£75k) or Morgan Smith (£50k) might be worth a look.

There are plenty of options in the Championship to look at lower down the scale, Alistair Leek and Liam Carberry both scored plenty of points last season and are available at £20k.
