Managers and players from Dearne Valley Bulldogs in Bolton Upon Dearne are celebrating a massive victory off the pitch – after winning a major national contest.

They were one of just five amateur rugby clubs who had made it through to the closing round of Jacamo’s competition to find the UK’s most dedicated side. And now after rallying for support from friends, family and residents of Bolton Upon Dearne, Dearne Valley Bulldogs have won a £1,000 sponsorship deal with Jacamo and a training session with top team, Wigan Warriors after gaining the support from over 40,000 fans who voted on the Jacamo facebook page.

After being nominated for the competition by long-time fan Leslie Binns, the big cash prize will give the club a great boost in 2013 – helping to keep the team playing and also helping to repair the club house. They beat teams from across the country to reach the final of the contest

As Leslie explains: “The Dearne Valley Bulldogs is not just an ARLFC but the epicentre of our community spirit. Having not only risen through the ranks of the Pennine league, it has shown what a group of likeminded, hardworking and selfless individuals can do for the local community. Whilst struggling with finance, personal problems, clubhouse vandalism, sponsorship and the creation of youth teams, DVB has still managed to raise money for local projects and individuals less fortunate than themselves.

“I am an ex-serviceman, injured in Afghanistan 2009 by a roadside bomb. On my return the members of DVB were a pillar of strength during my recovery and for that I cannot thank them enough.”

“I have personally paid for a new strip for this season as a gesture of my gratitude; however, winning this competition is the cherry on top for the team providing vital additional funding.”

Team coach and chairman of the junior side of the club, Duncan Henderson said, “We’re delighted to win the Jacamo competition, the money will be used to improve and repair our facilities, such as the changing rooms and club house. We’re also really looking forward to training with the Wigan Warriors who will no doubt help to develop our performance and help us towards a successful season ahead.”

Lucy Dobson, Jacamo spokesperson says: “We’re delighted to be able to announce the winner in what has proved to be a brilliant competition with some amazing entries.”

“It’s been a real honour to hear from all the teams out there and to learn more about the great work they do. With over 40,000 votes on our facebook page, Dearne Valley Bulldogs are clearly deserved winners with a fantastic local community supporting the great work they do on and off the pitch.”
